7971 Meckbach (9002 P-L) is a main-belt asteroid discovered on October 17, 1960 by Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory. The asteroid was named in honor of the German physician Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Meckbach at the "Centro Atómico Bariloche" (Argentina).
